Simplifying Automated Reporting

Purem by Eberspächer significantly improved efficiency and reduced manual errors by automating the creation of simulation evaluation reports, drastically cutting down on report generation time and maintenance efforts.

80% less effort for automation

420% ROI within the first year

90% reduction in maintenance effort

Challenge

The manual creation of PowerPoint reports from simulation results was a major challenge for CAE engineers at Purem by Eberspächer. Existing scripts were outdated, lacked necessary functionalities, and required constant maintenance. One critical missing feature was the ability to automatically rotate parts to capture stress hotspots from optimal angles, which limited the effectiveness of the reports. This deficiency, combined with the frequent need to update scripts for API changes, made the reporting process time-consuming and prone to errors.

Engineers were spending 20% of their time on reporting, relying on scripts that only a few could understand the inner workings of. This reliance on manual updates and the lack of automated visual enhancements not only slowed down report generation but also resulted in inconsistencies and inaccuracies, especially in high-priority projects requiring fast and precise reporting.

Automating our CAE reporting process with the Synera low-code language has significantly reduced our manual workload. Now we can create reports on the fly and don’t need to think about maintaining our previous scripted solution. This transformation allowing us to focus on engineering excellence rather than repetitive reporting tasks.

Purem by Eberspächer is a subsidiary of the Esslingen-based Eberspächer Group. Around 7,000 employees develop and produce exhaust gas purification and acoustic systems for passenger cars, commercial vehicles and off-road vehicles for clean and quiet mobility. The technologies contribute significantly to the fulfilment of the strictest emission standards and noise guidelines. The customer base includes the world's leading vehicle manufacturers. In 2020, the division generated sales of around 4.4 billion euros within the Group.

Solution

An advanced automated reporting solution was built by an CAE engineer without requiring any programming knowledge. The implemented solution transformed the way reports were generated. Engineers can now specify the file path to simulation folders, which are used by the workflow to identify the required simulation decks and result files. The Synera workflow processed the simulation data, generating detailed screenshots of the system and individual parts. Unlike the previous solution, the new automation included the ability to rotate parts automatically, ensuring that stress hotspots were captured from the best possible angles for clarity and insight.

In addition to improved visual quality, the workflow automatically extracted and populated key data such as local maximum stress values, deformations, part properties and KPIs such as part name, number, weight, and material into a PowerPoint template aligned with Purem by Eberspächer’s corporate identity. The report was saved under a predefined name in a specified folder. This automation not only improved the quality and accuracy of the reports but also drastically reduced the time and effort required to create them. The new solution minimized the need for script maintenance by 90%, as the Synera OfficeConnector Add-In handled API changes, eliminating a significant bottleneck in the reporting process.
